Celebrate Labor Day in Crisfield, Maryland: The National Hard Crab Derby

Labor Day in Crisfield, Maryland, is more than just a three-day weekend and a celebration of our workers; it's the time to honor our annual Hard Crab Derby! This four-day weekend event is a cherished tradition that captures the essence of Crisfield's rich crabbing heritage.

A Tradition Since 1947

The National Hard Crab Derby began in 1947, thanks to local editor Egbert Quinn. Quinn suggested the event as a way to honor the crabbing heritage that Crisfield is known for. While Crisfield's seafood industry initially revolved around winter oyster dredging, the 1860s marked a turning point when locals began harvesting Blue Hard Crabs.

Originally considered a food for desperate times, the blue crustacean soon gained popularity and became a delicacy. Today, it's a seafood icon of Maryland. Alongside oysters, watermen started exporting Hard Crabs, Soft Crabs, and Crab Meat, thanks to a railroad that ran through the heart of Crisfield. This led to a seafood boom that established Crisfield as one of the most reputable places for seafood in its time.
